Metal halide bulb question?

alright so hears the deal. i got a 100 watt metal halide bulb..now i jsut found out it doesnt work in a lamp..so i need a ballest..now i dont understand what a ballest is..it looks to me like a box..how does that make a light bulb work..i have no idea..please help!!

do you suggest getting a metal halide light from ebay? if so what kinds of things should i be looking for?…please help…i have a 4 foot deep aquarium 4 saltwater and i am looking for somthing around 20,000K…..is that right?…thanks!!!!
