Powerful Sale
Power limits of a 350th transmission?

I found a 400 small block Chevy for sale, and I was thinking about building it up and dropping it in my 78 El Camino.

Right now my El Camino has a stock 350th transmission and I was wondering if this motor would be too powerful for it to handle. I probably want to build it up to about 400-450 horsepower.

Well, it kind of depends on what you're going to do with it. For strictly street driving, a stock TH350 should be okay to around 400 h.p. if the trans is in good shape, but personally, I'd still build it.

Horsepower alone does not generally break drive-train components, its mostly the sudden impacts created by transbrakes, slicks or drag radials, low gear ratios, etc. A TH350 behind a 500 h.p. big block may live forever if it's driven conservatively, or 250 h.p. could break a case in half with a transbrake and slicks.
